Our friend Catcher turned 1 yesterday, and I made him this owl.  I got a few pictures of the finished (stuffed) product later in the evening when the light wasn’t so great.  But maybe I’ll share them once they’re uploaded.

As a jumping-off point, I used the image from a Cutting Edge magazine that was on my desk in yesterday’s post.  (I didn’t have much time for creative embellishments.)  I just cut out all the fabric freehand (except for the circles) and then stitched the applique on using the zigzag stitch.  It took a few hours, but it was very simple.   And I believe it was genuinely appreciated.  We have such sweet friends.

Next on my sewing agenda is to knock out some utilitarian items we’ve been needing for a while.  I’ve been making a lot of toys lately and feel a little guilty.  I saw this, and it reminded me that Evan has been asking me to make a case for our camera for the last 2 1/2 years that we’ve owned it.  Hmmm.  So my priorities are a little askew.  I’m not gonna lie.

He’s also been asking for some storage solution for our “medicine cabinet.”  Right now, we have a Reasor’s grocery bag under our sink with all our cough syrups, bandages, gas drops, etc. in it.  And it is rather annoying since every time one digs through said grocery bag, one does not feel well or has child in tow who does not feel well.  I haven’t decided what the best solution for this will be.  If you have any suggestions or links, please share!  I’m all eyes.

We don’t have an official medicine cabinet, either. For years I’ve stored all of our medicines, herbal remedy ingredients and other illness-related knick-knacks in two plastic Sterilite pull-out drawers. They are about as big as boot shoeboxes and we store them on a rack in our closet — accessible and low enough not to be awkward for us adults to reach, but high enough to keep things safely away from the littles.

But then again, plastic boxes aren’t particularly craft or whimsical, are they? They are easy to wipe down if some medicine leaks, though.

    : )

Sorry — That shoulda been “craftY”

My wife whips together the niftiest things in the shortest amount of time. I can’t tell you how much money we save on gifts just because she makes them instead (and really, homemade stuff is much more appreciated). Nyah nyah, I have the coolest wife. :)

And as much as I love the plastic Reasor bag, it really must go. I heartily support your creation of something else to store our medicine in.

    That is sooo cute!!
Medicines? We keep them in a plastic container in the kitchen. Not too interesting.

A plastic container sounds very smart and practical. For goodness’ sake, we keep some of our clothes in plastic drawers in our closet, so I’m not opposed to that solution!

    Evan, you make me blush.

cute owl! I just use a plastic basket/bin for our medicine. It’s fairly easy to find things, but not too high tech

Guess we are like everyone else- medicine is kept in two plastic baskets in the bathroom cabinet. I try to organize them into “things we use more often” (like tylenol and benedryl) and “things we use less often ” (like gauze and stomach medicine). It still gets messy but I try to clean it out once a year. I think it’s time to clean out because Mike said he didn’t want to dig through everything a few nights ago when he needed a cough drop :-)
