I have a Necchi 6110. I got it from the local sew & vac guy, figuring if he recommends it, it must be pretty good. I almost went with a Viking - great machines - but in the end this one fitted my budget as well as my it needs a few important things (like buttonholer) rather than all the fancy extras. I also wanted a easy to use mechanical model that my girls would one day graduate into, when I was ready to upgrade.
That's my two cents!

Well, I have a pfaff which I've had for over ten years, and it's worked like a dream and never given me any problems. I think if it ever dies I will go into deep mourning. It's been such a reliable friend!

I have the Husqvarna Viking 118. It's great, I can't rave enough. I wanted a mechanical machine that had a few more bells and whistles than a straight and zig zag stitch. I like the drop in bobbin, needle up/down feature and speed control switch. I've sewed through some pretty thick layers for my bags and it's held up just fine as long as I'm using a denim needle. I paid $400 this past June. Definitely check out the Vikings- and buy it from a sewing shop rather than Joann's. The sewing shop will be able to help you right away, where as Joann's sends the machines out for repair.

Good Luck!

I use a Bernina 1130 that I have had for 20 years. I have never had a single tension problem with it or any other problem. My Mom bought the same model used and she has never had a problem either. They are pretty basic - no embroidery, etc. I fought with a Sears machine for years before I bought this one and it has been worth every penny. You might check Craigslist, etc. to see if anyone has an old basic Bernina for sale. They might be a little more initially, but over 20 years of hassle-free sewing, it is worth it.

I also have a Husqvarna Viking, low-end model. It's the only machine I've ever used, so I don't have much to compare it with. It's very simple to use, but I have had some problems going through several layers. Of course, this could be more due to the user than the machine. Otherwise no problems with it. And, that must have been a very popular sheet during its day, because I have it too!

Good luck!

I have a Husqvarna Viking. It is the low end one that does a few embroidery stitches. I have sewn on many, many different machines in my life. This is the best one ever. I bought it because I was making a denim slipcover and the machine I had kept having tension and bobbin issues- but then again, every sewing machine I had ever used had those same problems. Not so with this one! I have never had a single problem with it. I've been sewing with it for 3 years now. Good luck!

Oh I love it when I recognize old fabrics. I made a friend some lounge pants from the sheet you are using. Isn't it so cheerful? My machine is due for an upgrade, I feel a little overwhelmed by all the options...
